Marcala is located in a mountainous region and for some villages the closest hospital is over 4 hours away. Needless to say, the majority of childbirths are delivered in the home with a traditional village midwife. The village midwives have had no official training and have little knowledge of what to during emergencies and thus many of the deaths that occur are preventable.

It’s estimated that every year 585,000 women in developing countries needlessly die from complications during child birth. These deaths are preventable through properly training local midwives on proper techniques of obstetrics. To help reduce this number, W.A.S.H. created a one year training course for local midwives.

What you can do! To provide learning materials to the women for one year a donation of $12 is needed for each midwife. Click on the donate tab or click here to help reduce the number of women dieing from complications during child birth.
