Depuradores? A depurador is a flocculation/sedimentation tank that delivers clean dissenfected drinking water. They are constructed in country by local people and then delivered to schools or communities. Why the need? Surface water sources for drinking are often contaminated, especially in tropical regions where tropical rains wash sediment laden contaminants into the rivers. Disinfection alone cannot eliminate the bacteria, viruses and parasites that cause illnesses. Therefore, IRWA developed the depuredor to help combat the more than 4,000 deaths everyday from diarrheal diseases. What you can do? A donation of $200 can put a depurador in a school or community. To help change gender inequality in third world countries, W.A.S.H. and IRWA have trained a local woman to instruct schools and communities on how to use the depurador and to teach children and adults the importance of disinfected water. She also revisits the sites to ensure proper use of the depuredor and to monitor the water quality. This ensures the sustainability of the project.
