Start a fundraising campaign in your neighborhood:

  • Walk for Water Contact a local school to host the event on their track.  Contact local newspapers so they can write an article about your Walk for Water 5 km rally.  Contact community leaders and local organizations like Rotary Club, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Eagles Club, Key Club to gain support.  Charge $20 dollar entry fee.
  • Penny Challenge Organize your school or club to compete in the Penny Challenge.  Each penny is worth a point, and the team that gets the most points wins. Bills or coins other than pennies count as negative points (a quarter is –25 points) and can be put in the other team’s container thus decreasing your competitors total points, but increasing the total money raised! Display the pennies in large clear containers so people can watch the money pile up.  Try guys against girls, grades competing against each other, or classrooms racing to have the most points.  Students have raised hundreds of dollars this way.
  • Sponsorship and Direct Donation - Ask for support or sponsorship from members of your community.  Many individuals and groups have money set aside to give to good causes. They are just waiting for you to show up to let them know what you’re doing to make a positive difference in the world.
  • Group Garage SaleGet your whole class or club together and hold one big garage sale.  This is always a hit, is lots of fun, and can make you a lot of money in one day. Make sure you have a good site for the sale (near major intersections that people will know), that you coordinate items being dropped off, and that you advertise your sale in the local paper’s classified ads and with big signs with arrows. One school in Colorado with 320 students raised $18,000 with a huge school wide garage sale!
  • ChocolateChocolate, a long-time favorite treat for many people sells itself, making your job easy! Even better, while raising funds to support your action project you can help small-scale farmers improve their quality of life. Here’s how! La Siembra Co-operative, maker of high quality, fair trade, organic chocolate, gives a share of their profits to small farmer families who own and operate organic cocoa and sugar co-operatives in the Dominican Republic and Paraguay. By purchasing La Siembra’s certified fair trade, organic chocolate you support traditional agricultural practices (small scale, shade grown, and chemical free) and protect the livelihoods of small farmers. For more information on how to place an order with La Siembra Co-operative visit www.lasiembra.com or call 613-235-6122.
